Vehicle Sales Receipt: Create a Verified Car Sale Receipt
A verified vehicle sales receipt is the written record of a vehicle sale. It identifies the seller, the buyer and the vehicle, and records the price, the mileage, the service history, any known faults and the terms of the sale. Robot Lawyer drafts the receipt from your answers, for the law of the country or state you choose. On the Verified plan, a legal professional checks it before you sign.

What Is a Vehicle Sales Receipt?
A vehicle sales receipt proves that a sale took place and on what terms. It protects the seller if the buyer later complains about something that was disclosed, and protects the buyer by recording what the seller said about the vehicle and confirming they had the right to sell it.
When Do You Need One?
- Private car sales
Selling or buying a used car, van or motorbike privately. - Small dealers and traders
Recording the details of each vehicle sold. - Part exchanges and family sales
Any sale where a clear record of price and condition matters.
What's Included in Your Receipt?
- Seller and buyer
Names and addresses of both parties. - The vehicle
Make, model, colour, registration, VIN and mileage. - The price
The amount paid, the payment method and the date. - Condition and history
Full, partial or no service history, and any known faults or modifications. - Seller's confirmations
That the seller owns the vehicle and it is free of outstanding finance. - Terms of sale
For private sales, whether the vehicle is sold as seen.
Private and Trade Sales (UK Only)
In the UK, a private seller must describe the vehicle accurately and have the right to sell it, but the Consumer Rights Act 2015 quality rules don't apply. A business selling to a consumer can't exclude the buyer's statutory rights, so a trader's receipt must not say "sold as seen". Remember to tell the DVLA about the change of keeper.

Vehicle Sales Receipt FAQs
Is a receipt enough to prove a car sale?
It is good evidence of the sale and its terms. In the UK, you must also update the DVLA, which is separate from the receipt.
What does "sold as seen" mean?
It means the buyer accepts the vehicle in its current condition. It can be used in private sales, but it doesn't protect a seller who misdescribes the vehicle, and a trader can't use it to remove a consumer's rights.
Should I check for outstanding finance?
Yes. A buyer should run a history check. The receipt records the seller's confirmation that there is no outstanding finance.
